The neat thing about this project is that you have the option to use your final piece as wall art or a serving tray, or both! That’s some functional art! This is a beginners project, as the framed canvas makes the resin process much easier. The trick is to use different types of mediums in your resin. Here are just a few of the mediums I use together in most of my pieces:
Pearl Ex Pigments: this is the kit I have and I love it
For beginners, I suggest starting with a framed canvas like this one, and picking 3-4 colors for your project. For best results, pick a dark color, light color, accent color, and a metallic. Use a different medium for each, such as alcohol inks, acrylic inks, acrylic Paints, pigment powders, spray paint, etc.Budget friendly options/tips:
-eyeshadows work just like pigment powders and you can get some really cool colors at your local dollar store if you don’t already have some in the back of your makeup drawer!
-food coloring works to give a transparent look to your resin, just like alcohol inks. Food coloring works great with a little silicone oil mixed in it if you want a cell, lacing effect in your piece
Last tip of the day: KNOW WHEN TO STOP. DO NOT WORK YOUR RESIN INTO A MUDDY MESS. THE EFFECTS WILL HAPPEN AFTER YOU WALK AWAY FROM THE PIECE. trust in the process.

Here are some of the items I use frequently in my resin art:
(I use MDF board, but birch wood will work just as well. You can buy MDF board at Home Depot or Lowe’s and they are usually happy to cut it to whichever size you prefer.)Sculpey Premo Polymer Clay in Graphite
