Quick Links

in this video, I make a triptych resin painting on three round wooden canvases. I use primary colors and gold. I use several mediums to color my resin including pigment powders, inks, acrylic paints, spray paint, and more. For links to supplies I use in my Resin Art, see below.

Tips:  Use a different medium for each, such as alcohol inks, acrylic inks, acrylic Paints, pigment powders, spray paint, etc.Budget friendly options/tips:

-eyeshadows work just like pigment powders and you can get some really cool colors at your local dollar store if you don’t already have some in the back of your makeup drawer!

-food coloring works to give a transparent look to your resin, just like alcohol inks.  Food coloring works great with a little silicone oil mixed in it if you want a cell, lacing effect in your piece

Last tip of the day: KNOW WHEN TO STOP.  DO NOT WORK YOUR RESIN INTO A MUDDY MESS.  THE EFFECTS WILL HAPPEN AFTER YOU WALK AWAY FROM THE PIECE.  trust in the process.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Here are some of the items I use frequently in my resin art:

Apple Barrel Acrylic Paint

Envirotex Lite Epoxy Resin

Pearl Ex Pigments:   this is the kit I have and I love it

Dr. Ph Martin’s India Ink

Alcohol Inks

silicone oil

Heat gun

Silicone Paint Brushes

Wood Canvas (I use MDF board, but birch wood will work just as well.  You can buy MDF board at Home Depot or Lowe’s and they are usually happy to cut it to whichever size you prefer.)

Sculpey Premo Polymer Clay in Graphite

Borax

White pipe cleaners

Stretched 18×24 inch canvas

Silicone Heart Molds

  1. wow! Interesting art work. I haven’t tried this before, im sure my daughter would love to try this. But i can imagine we will both get so messy with it hehe, but it is all for love of fun. I didn’t know we could use eyeshadows, that’s really cool. I have lots of expired ones in my drawer to put into good use. thanks for sharing.

    1. Eyeshadow is a great way to save money on coloring mediums. Pigment powders can cost a pretty penny and, honestly, it really is the same thing . Also, using food coloring instead of buying expensive alcohol inks will give you a translucent colored final resin piece. you can make some stunning effects with things you can find at your local dollar store. Just to be clear though, epoxy resin is pricey. This isn’t a craft that is easily done on a tight budget due to the price of resin. However, there are ways to save and I love sharing them with my readers!
