What is a Thermosetting Polymer?
A polymer is…
a substance that has a molecular structure consisting chiefly or entirely of many similar units bonded together. These polymers are like building blocks, and when they are bonded together, they create plastic. The more polymers that are bonded together, (more iterations of the polymer) the thicker the plastic. The fewer polymers, the thinner the plastic. For simplicities sake, polymers make up the material we know of as plastic.
Thermosetting means…
If you break the word down to its origins, ‘thermo’ means related to heat and ‘setting’ means curing. (turning into hard plastic, in this case) So basically, thermosetting means curing with heat.
Therefore, a thermosetting polymer is…
a plastic that is hardened with the introduction of heat, whether that hear is introduced by an external (UV Resin) or internal force (epoxy resins)

The Role Of Heat in Thermosetting
Thermosetting Polymers are a type of plastic that is irreversibly hardened by curing from a liquid state to a solid-state. Thermosetting Polymers, such as resin, start to cure with the introduction of heat. (Cure=Harden)
UV Resin vs. Epoxy Resin
In the case of UV resin, the curing process begins when the UV light, an external heat force, is shone onto the resin. In the case of epoxy resin, a hardener is mixed in with the resin, which acts as a catalyst and begins to heat the mixture internally. This internal chemical reaction starts the curing process of an epoxy resin.
Explaining Epoxy In Simple Terms
Let me sum all the ‘mumbo-jumbo’ science talk up into something a little simpler.
Epoxy resins are made by combining two components: a liquid resin and a hardener.
The mixing ratio of resin to hardener is usually 1:1. However, some types call for mixing a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio.
Once the two components are mixed, a chemical reaction takes place, hardening the liquid resin to turn into solid plastic within a certain amount of time. Depending on the type of epoxy resin you are using, this time differs, from minutes to hours, to days!
This reaction results in a beautiful, clear, and glossy substance we refer to as hardened epoxy resin.
IMPORTANT TIP: Closely follow the directions included with the epoxy resin brand you are using because many products require different mixing ratios. Sometimes, even resins that are the same brand, may call for different measurements before mixing.
What Is Epoxy Resin Art?
Any type of project where we use epoxy resin, whether colored and put on a canvas or poured into a mold, is considered “epoxy resin art.”
In the simplest of terms, epoxy resin art is the act of creating art with epoxy resin.

Safety Guidelines For Resin Art
When working with resin, following proper safety guidelines are essential. Remember you are working with chemicals and any exposure should be taken seriously.
Individuals may react differently when exposed to epoxy resins.
Exposure happens through contact with skin, as well as inhalation of particles or fumes released from epoxy resin into the air.
Reactions to Resin Exposure
Unfortunately, when working with epoxy resin a person may experience some potential adverse reactions caused by their exposure to the epoxy resin. Exposure to epoxy resins can cause a spectrum of symptoms, ranging from mild rashes to severe allergic reactions. In other cases, an individual exposed to epoxy resins chemicals suffers no adverse reactions.
Even if you are lucky enough to not experience any immediate exposure symptoms, it is still important to remember that repeated exposure to epoxy resin also has a risk of causing delayed reactions. In other words, adverse effects may not be seen until a person is exposed repeatedly, over a certain period.
Therefore, it is important for everyone working with epoxy resin to follow the most basic of recommended safety precautions, which I have listed below.
Safety Precautions for Resin Art
Here are some quick safety guidelines to follow when working with epoxy resin:
Proper Ventilation in the Workspace
Proper PPE
Wearing PPE, or personal protective equipment is the most basic requirement when working with epoxy resin.
Gloves
The first type of PPE recommended is gloves to protect your hands. Nitrile gloves are recommended, as they are known to stand up to harsh chemicals like epoxy resin. Also, nitrile is less likely than latex to cause adverse skin reactions. Some have claimed that latex gloves also inhibit the curing of some epoxy resins, so stick with nitrile. The following nitrile gloves are recommended: (and affordable!)
Remember, gloves do not protect your arms. So, if you are extra sensitive to chemicals on the skin, wear long sleeves when working with epoxy resin.

How to Get Epoxy Resin Off Skin
If you get epoxy resin on your skin, try to use soap and water to get it off first. Honestly, I have never had success using just soap and water, but every source advises you to try this method first, so go for it.
When you realize this does not work, soak a rag in isopropyl alcohol and wipe the epoxy resin off your skin. (Warning: Alcohol may dry out your skin, so be sure to rinse with water afterward. You may also want to apply a lotion after scrubbing off the epoxy resin.
I have only found one product that works flawlessly to get epoxy resin off the skin. I try to have this product on hand no matter what. Made by Grime Boss, they are available for purchase at the Home Depot, or at the following link:
NOTE: Never use a ketone or chlorine-based product to wipe epoxy resin off the skin. These products will push the epoxy resin deeper into your skin.
What Does Working Time Mean?
As mentioned earlier, epoxy resin and a hardener combine to solidify the resin. This timeframe between which the resin turns from a liquid to a solid is called cure time.
The cure time can be divided into 3 stages:
- Working Time. The period after resin and hardener are mixed, but before it begins to solidify. The mixture is still a liquid and is suitable to work with. All mixing, smoothing, shaping, assembling, pouring, etc. should take place during this time. (Also called gel time or open time.)
- Initial epoxy cure. At this stage, the epoxy starts to cure, turning into a gel consistency. The epoxy is no longer workable at this point. Many epoxies start to feel warmer in the cup at this point. (Note: The more product in a cup, the sooner the initial epoxy sure starts.)
- Final epoxy cure. At this point, the chemical reaction between the resin and the hardener is complete. The mixture has turned into a solid and you should not be able to bend it or produce a dent in it. (This may not be true for softer resins, or in the event, the epoxy was not mixed or measured correctly.) At this stage, an artist can sand and polish the final product.
Working time is crucial to take into consideration when working with epoxy as it is the time when you will make the most significant changes to the product.
What is Resin Viscosity?
Resin viscosity defines the flowability of the resin. Low viscosity resins are thinner and runnier, whereas high viscosity resins are thicker.
Viscosity, or thickness of a liquid, is measured in units called centipoise (cP). Viscosity is measured on a spectrum from low to high, from 1cP to millions of cP. (Source: MAS Epoxy)
Water is an example of a liquid with a viscosity of 1cP.
Molasses has a viscosity closer to 10,000cP.
The viscosity of lard is 100,000cP.

Low Viscosity Epoxy Resins
Low viscosity epoxy resins have a consistency anywhere from 100cP to 1,000cP. Resins designated for art projects usually have a viscosity of around 1000cP. This means it is thicker than water, but still thick enough to be easily controlled while pouring. For reference, 1000cP is the viscosity of honey.
When to Use Low Viscosity Epoxy Resins
Low-viscosity epoxy resin works best for deep-level penetration and filling small cavities. With low viscosity resins, the thinner viscosity prevents air bubbles. For these reasons, low viscosity resins are best for the following art projects:
- Casting Projects (ie creating miniatures)
- Sealing Wood and other Materials
- Paintings (Low viscosity resins allow an artist to combine colored epoxy on the canvas and create different effects)
- Sculptures
- Jewelry
- Encapsulating Objects (Dried Flowers, Candies, etc.)
- Deep Pours (NOTE: Always read directions for each brand carefully. For really deep pours, many brands will require you to layer multiple shallow pours to achieve depth. However, Superclear Deep Pour Epoxy allows for a 2-6 inch pour in one session, but you have to make sure the temperature of the room you are pouring in is between 72 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.)
Note: Low viscosity resins are often referred to as casting resins, as they release air bubbles easily, even when poured in thicker quantities.
Medium Viscosity Epoxy Resins
Medium viscosity epoxy resins are thicker. These resins are less permeable than low-viscosity formulas, offering greater material strength after curing. The measurement of a medium viscosity resin is anywhere from 1,000cP to around 5,000cP. For reference, hand cleaner has a viscosity of 2,000cP and shampoo has a viscosity of 3,000cP.
Regarding temperatures, a moderately (medium) viscous epoxy resin can withstand elevated temperatures and, in the construction field, is often used for filament winding, vacuum bagging, and tooling.
Another characteristic of a medium viscosity resin is its ability to self-level, making these epoxy resins ideal for top coating paintings.
When to Use Medium Viscosity Epoxy Resins
Medium viscosity epoxy resins are great for coating projects, as well as castings without intricate detail. Here are some examples of art projects that medium viscosity epoxy resins work great for:
- Coasters
- Serving Trays
- Shot Glasses
- Top coating Paintings
- Jewelry

- River Tables (without small voids that need to be filled)
High Viscosity Epoxy Resin
High-viscosity epoxy has a paste-like consistency and is the most resilient option. It bonds objects together with superior strength. Also, high viscosity epoxy resins are the most heat resistant. In the construction industry, high viscosity epoxy resins are used in projects where durability and strength are key. High viscosity epoxy resins usually measure above 5,000cP.
When to Use High Viscosity Epoxy Resins
High-viscosity resins are suitable for certain art projects. Here are some examples:
- Geode Art (where an artist wants colors to stay separate)
- Paintings (when the artist does not wish for colors to blend)
- Gluing sculpture parts together
- Doming Art Pieces or Paintings
It is good practice to follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely while working with epoxy resins of any viscosity to avoid any mishaps.
Viscosities’ Effect on Working Time and Cure Time
Low-viscosity resins cure slowly, and as a result, usually have longer working times. A low viscosity epoxy resin takes anywhere from 12 hours to an entire day to cure.
On the other hand, highly viscous epoxy resins have a shorter working time, but usually, cure more quickly.
Temperature’s Effect on Viscosity
The temperature of the room affects the viscosity of the epoxy resin in that room. The warmer the temperature, the thinner your epoxy resin becomes, The colder the temperature, the thicker.
This is handy to know when you want to thin out the epoxy resin you are using. For example, placing your cup of epoxy resin into a larger cup of warm water will thin the epoxy resin. This helps if you need to speed up the rate at which your epoxy flows from cup to canvas or mold.
Keep in mind, however, the thermosetting properties of epoxy resin, (discussed above) dictate that as you heat the epoxy resin, the working time gets shorter as the epoxy enters the curing phase sooner. Be cognizant of how much heat you are applying to your epoxy.
UV Protection in Epoxy
UV resistance is a crucial aspect in the determination of good quality epoxy resin. Poor UV resistance results in discoloration
immediately upon exposure to UV rays. All epoxy resin eventually yellows and loses its shine after repeated exposure to UV light. Breakdown of the coating can also occur because of UV damage. This damage caused by UV lights is irreversible.
While there have been improvements in stabilizing epoxy against UV light, the solutions are not permanent. However, some products have made more significant strives in improving their epoxy resin formulas to better protect from damage caused by UV exposure.
Types Of UV Protections in Epoxy Resins
UV Stabilizers and Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers (HALS)
Epoxy Resins including both a UV stabilizer and a Hindered Amine Light Stabilizer, (HALS) provide the best protection from damage caused by UV exposure.
UV Stabilizers protect from most of the damage caused by UV exposure, including loss of gloss, cracking, chalking, and delamination. However, UV stabilizers are not great at protecting against yellowing.
For protection from the yellowing caused by UV exposure, an epoxy resin should include HALS in its ingredients. HALS targets yellowing, specifically by interrupting the yellowing process at the outset, hindering the discoloration process from ever starting.
UV Protection Qualities’ Effect on The Price of Epoxy Resins
The addition of both of these additives in an epoxy resin formula increases the price of epoxy resin. Keep in mind, yellowing should only be a concern if you are attempting a resin art project that utilizes clear, white, or lightly colored epoxy resin.
These are the only types of projects where yellowing would be apparent if it were to happen.
So, if you are looking to save money on a project that does not include clear resin in the final piece, you do not need to purchase an epoxy resin with HALS in the formula. If attempting a project where glossiness is not a concern, you may also be able to save some money by using an epoxy resin without UV stabilizers or HALS included in the formula at all.
For the case of this article, we have included epoxy resins that employ, at the very least, UV stabilizers. However, many, if not most, also include HALS.
Epoxy Resin Toxicity
Concerning epoxy resin toxicity, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are considered. VOCs cause 
irritation in the nose, throat, and lungs. VOCs are fumes. However, not all of these fumes are identifiable through smell. Rest assured, most epoxy resins formulate for use in art have very little, VOCs. Most have none. With low or no VOCs an epoxy resin is considered safe to use in ventilated areas.
Although epoxy resin has been proven to be safe for use indoors, we always suggest using proper PPE protection, which we discussed above. Also, just because an epoxy resin is safe for artists to use while taking the correct precautions, does not mean that epoxy resin is safe for the environment.
There are not many products that are completely environmentally friendly in the epoxy resin market. However, we would like to spotlight EcoPoxy real fast.
