Factors To Consider When Buying Silicone Coaster Molds For Resin Art
Before you put your new resin coaster molds in your cart and decide to make a purchase, there are a few factors upon which you should judge the molds to ensure you are getting a quality product.
Here are a few things you should keep in mind while choosing your resin coaster molds:
- Finish
- Sturdiness and durability
- Ease of clean-up
- Thickness
- Affordability
- Color
How We Rate The Best Silicone Coaster Molds For Resin– The Scale of Silicone Spoons
Our silicone coaster molds for resin are rated using our Scale of Silicone Spoons.
Each silicone coaster mold is judged on several characteristics, such as durability, flexibility, versatility, and so on. A score of one spoon indicates a low score for the specified category, whereas a score of five spoons indicates a perfect score.
Our Scale of Silicone Spoons looks like this:
Any product that receives five silicone spoons in all categories, a perfect score, receives our coveted Gold-Leafed Spoon Award. Products receiving this award are the tried and true products we swear by for our own resin art projects!
Here is a picture of our Gold-Leafed Spoon Award:
How To Make Our ‘Best Of’ List
Our list of the best silicone coaster molds for resin consists of products that meet and exceed all of the below-mentioned qualities:
Finish
Before you start molding your resin for coasters, one thing to keep in mind is the surface of the mold itself. Ideally, the surface of the mold should be smooth. It should be free of any grooves, edges, and sharp creases to give a seamless finish.
Shiny Molds vs. Matte Molds
Importantly, the finish on your silicone mold will determine how the final resin casting
turns out. For example, a coaster mold with a shiny finish will produce shiny castings. A silicone coaster mold for resin with a matte finish will produce a resin casting with a duller finish.
We prefer shiny molds because the casting comes out with a shine right out of the mold. Otherwise, we would have to put another resin coat on our coasters, or worse, we would have to polish the coasters to produce a shine. We don’t like adding extra steps to our projects, especially since epoxy resin is not cheap and polishing resin is unnecessarily labor-intensive. For the purposes of our scale, we rate molds with a shiny finish with more silicone spoons than molds with a matte finish. If you prefer a matte finish, keep this in mind before deciding which mold to purchase.
Sturdiness/Durability
Durability is a big factor to consider when buying any silicone product. Your new resin coaster molds should be made from durable silicone that does not get ruined after a couple of uses. It should provide you with long service life and the mold should be reusable multiple times. A thick silicone mold is always better to reduce the risk of tears while demolding your castings. Also, a silicone mold should be able to take at least a little bit of heat as resin gets very warm while curing and it is nice to be able to ruin a heat source over a resin to pop any air bubbles after we have poured our castings. All of these things are taken into consideration when we hand out our ratings for this category.
Easy To Clean
One of the most unappealing yet inescapable tasks at the end of every art project is cleaning. No matter what you do, you are bound to make a mess. Having an easy-to-clean art tool in your arsenal is a godsend for art enthusiasts and hobbyists. We choose silicone to cast resin because it is one of the only surfaces that resin does not adhere to permanently. As soon as the epoxy resin is cured, it should peel out very easily, separating from your silicone mold with ease. There should not be much to do, aside from wiping down with a wet cloth once you have demolded your project. An ideal resin coaster mold should be easy to clean once you are done and dusted with your art project.
Thickness
One vitally important aspect that should be taken into account for a quality silicone coaster mold is the thickness of the silicone material. The mold should provide enough flexibility for the resin cast to come out of it without much twisting and turning. This can only happen easily if the silicone mold is thick and easy to work with. Thin molds would give in under the pressure of twisting and can tear easily.
Affordability
A good silicone coaster mold for resin should not be too cheap as that could indicate poor quality. However, that does not mean you have to spend insane amounts of money on an over-priced product that gives you the same result as any other average mold out there. The resin coaster molds included in this list are affordable with no compromise on quality.
Color
The color of the mold you buy matters. Clear molds are almost always better than colored molds. This is because colored molds can make it difficult for you to see what color your resin casting will be after curing. You do not want to play a guessing game when a clear coaster can give you an accurate representation of what your final resin coaster will look like.

These molds come with the following properties:
- This resin coaster mold set comes with 4 pieces of round coaster molds and 1 piece of epoxy resin coaster holder mold. The holder mold comes in handy to keep your coasters organized.
- The dimensions for the product are 3.5*0.35 inches for the coaster molds and 4*1.6 inches for the holder mold.

- After using the product, you can clean it with mild soap and some water. Once washed, you can let them dry on their own, indoors.

- The dimensions are 5.51 inches in diameter. Each of the eight octagon edges are 2.17 inches long and the depth is .47 inches.

- The coaster stand mold is super cute and looks really great on a tabletop. We love that the holder allows you display all of your coasters individually, instead of only the coaster sitting on top, like many other coaster holders. Keep your desk clean and tidy.
- The flowers coaster molds have floral designs raised on the mold so your final coaster will have dimension to them. We recommend using a pigment powder in the crevices to add extra shine and glam to your final resin coasters!
- Made with a premium quality silicone material with excellent elasticity.
- The finish on these coaster molds is shiny so your final resin coasters will have a glass like shine to them!
- These coaster molds are also thicker than many of the cheaper products on the market, but they have not marked the price up too much. The flower coaster molds are 2.0mm thick and, weigh approximately 28.1g. Thick enough to get many uses and avoid tearing during the demold process.
- The crevices do make these a bit harder to clean, but that is the only category these flower coaster molds lost any points in!

Glad we could encourage you to get creative! It is so important for our overall well being!
I believe when it comes to art the only limit is your imagination. Additionally, the crafting DIY process gets your mind busy and focused and hence is stress relieving. Didn’t know there were that many different molds for these kind of projects out there. It’s also very east to distinguish based on the factors you lay out for each, though would have been better if you put the spoons graphic side by side for easier comparison. Thanks for this.
Great suggestion. We will work on that for our next post. Thanks for stopping by!
I’d never thought of making my own coasters. I do have all silicone coasters, and the are great because they are also resistant to heat. I could put one on a hot burner, and it would not melt. So sounds like the coasters would be much more durable. Is this something you can make at home yourself?
Yes Leahrae, however, it is just the mold that is silicone. The molds are for epoxy resin, so the final coaster is epoxy resin, not silicone. However, they are also very durable, although I would not place them on a hot burner. The appeal of making these coasters is that the options are endless. There are beach theme coasters, candy coasters, petri dish coasters, and tons more! And yes, all can be created at home in your own craft area!
Wow. What a cool and creative site. I really had no idea the various types of molds that are available out there. My wife is very much into the arts and crafts type of creations and was very interested when I showed her your article. This is something she’s definitely interested in trying out.
Thanks for sharing.
